A dream of ours has long since been to work from home and truly be able to make our own business decisions as many times our hands had been tied by corporate policies and procedures. During the 2020 pandemic our worlds became consumed with work due to the fact that so many other folks were stuck at home; the world kept moving and yet stood still. After several months we decided to take a weekend trip with our kids. We needed to get away from home and not feel so disconnected from the world. The first long weekend led to a few more throughout the year which helped us to realize that we were wasting precious time being unhappy. On our first “adventure” we stayed at a bed and breakfast outside Pigeon Forge, TN. We decided on that location because we enjoy having a space to ourselves, that we would not have gotten at a hotel, and because it promised views with access to local attractions. It was a nice drive to the B&B; however, when we arrived we realized that pictures can be deceiving. It was a nice place to stay, but it did not have the nature that we had expected. We pulled into the drive and there was no one to greet us despite the fact that we had recently been in contact via email. I remember feeling very uncomfortable opening the door of someone else’s home. After opening the second door, we located the owner and she gave us directions to our apartment above the garage. The first afternoon a massive thunderstorm swept through the area and knocked the power out for at least 24 hours! I won’t go into all the details, but it was a less than desirable stay. My background is in hospitality—specifically hotels. My husband and I are not unrealistic folks and do understand that no one can control Mother Nature. That said, our experience could have easily been turned around with a little customer service. We were born and raised in Tennessee and Southern hospitality is a thing. I would consider myself an overly accommodating person as I whole-heartedly believe that experiences should be special and memorable. On our way home my husband looked at me and said, “we could do that and do it well.” So we made plans to look for property. We began our search along the Caney Fork River which runs from the Cumberland Plateau to the Central Basin. In our younger years, Matt and I kayaked the river often and enjoyed the scenery along the banks. Fall of 2020, Matt scheduled a tour of a property that promised views. I remember taking the winding roads of White County and crossing the river to Van Buren where the elevation began to climb. We met the real estate agent at the bottom of a driveway that was visible for about 100 yards before disappearing into the woods; we packed the kids into the agent's side-by-side and up we went. The driveway quickly turned into a logging road as the property was recently cleared of timber. The thirty acre section of road was the only area untouched due to the 200 foot elevation increase. After a mile, we reached the top where the land leveled out to a wide expanse of raw land; it was very overwhelming! The agent drove us around the property, showing us all he had discovered, before taking us to the spot that made our decision. He stopped at a turn in the road that overlooked the valley below, and Matt's eyes lit up! To this day, he can't drive past the spot without hollering into the universe, "I love you!" We knew this would be a HUGE project as there was hardly any woodland remaining (just dirt), but we could see the potential. Biddle Bluff was officially ours December 11, 2020!First order of business was to have the property accessible by vehicle. We hired a company to widen the road to about eight feet and add a layer of gravel. That project was complete in April and soon after we took the first of many family camping trips. We have tested a variety of tents and camping gear along the way! Second project, which required much more time--years in fact, was to clean the mess left behind by the lumber company. Matt has worked hard over the last four years to clean up the slash piles left behind from the clear cut. In doing so, he has allowed us to see all the hidden gems our bluff has to offer. We have beautiful views along the majority of our property approximately 200 feet above the farmland below. He has cleaned up several seeps allowing the natural springs to flow down small creeks and fill ponds. The landscape is the slowest to return as we decided to let the woodland regenerate itself. Matt has managed to maintain some walking trails and an eighteen hole disc golf course throughout the young growth. We are now at the point that we would love to share our nature with others. We know that Biddle Bluff is not perfect; however, we hope that people will visit and enjoy the sounds, the views, the stars, and all that it has to offer. We then hope that those same people visit again to grow with us.
